About Bharatpur
Bharatpur sits on the eastern edge of Rajasthan, about 55 km from Agra, and was the seat of the Jat kings who ruled this part of the Braj country in the 18th century. The town is best known for Keoladeo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage wetland on its southern side where hundreds of bird species gather each winter. In the old town, Lohagarh Fort, the 'Iron Fort' built by Maharaja Suraj Mal, holds the palace and the Government Museum inside its earthen walls and moat.
Most visitors come for the birds, so the day starts early at the park gate and slows down by midday. Spend the morning in Keoladeo by cycle-rickshaw or bicycle, the afternoon at Lohagarh and the museum, and give a half-day to the garden palaces of Deeg, about 35 km to the north. Bharatpur is also easy to pair with Agra and Fatehpur Sikri, and the local food is simple Rajasthani fare such as dal baati churma, gatte ki sabzi and ghevar.
