About Lohagarh Fort

Lohagarh Fort, the 'Iron Fort', was built by Maharaja Suraj Mal in the early 18th century and sits at the heart of Bharatpur's old town. Unlike Rajasthan's hilltop forts, it stands on flat ground, protected by thick earthen walls and a wide moat.

The mud-packed walls absorbed cannon fire, and in 1805 the fort held out against a long British siege under Lord Lake. It was finally taken by the British in 1826. Inside, you can see the Jawahar Burj and Fateh Burj towers, the palace and the Government Museum.
