About Gohar Mahal
Gohar Mahal is a palace by the Upper Lake, built in 1820 by Qudsia Begum, also known as Gohar Begum, the first woman to rule Bhopal. Its three storeys mix Hindu and Mughal styles, with arched courtyards, carved balconies called jharokhas and a large water tank with fountains. It stands just behind Shaukat Mahal, in the Old City.
Today the palace is used for craft and handloom exhibitions and fairs, so you may find weavers and artisans selling their work in the courtyards. Some of the old halls, including the Diwan-e-Aam and Diwan-e-Khas, are closed to visitors for safety, but the courtyards and the views of the lake make it an easy stop on a walk through the Old City.
