About Sanchi Stupa
Sanchi is a hilltop of Buddhist monuments about 46 km north-east of Bhopal. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989. The Great Stupa at its centre was first built under the Mauryan emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE and enlarged later. It is one of the oldest stone structures in India, and its dome is about 36 m across and 16 m high.
The four carved gateways, or toranas, were added around the 1st century BCE. They are covered in scenes from the Buddha's life and the Jataka tales, but the Buddha himself is never shown as a person, only through symbols such as footprints, a horse or a tree. Smaller stupas, temples and monastery ruins stand around the Great Stupa, and there is an archaeological museum at the site. Sanchi makes an easy half-day or full-day trip from Bhopal.
