About the Upper Lake

The Upper Lake, or Bada Talab, is the large lake on the western side of Bhopal and the main reason it is called the City of Lakes. Tradition says it was created in the 11th century by the Paramara king Raja Bhoj, and in 2011 it was officially renamed Bhojtal after him. A statue of Raja Bhoj now stands on a pillar in the water, and the small Takia island holds the tomb of Shah Ali Shah.

The lake still supplies drinking water to a large part of the city, and together with the Lower Lake it forms the Bhoj Wetland, a Ramsar site of international importance. The VIP Road promenade is the favourite spot for sunset walks, and the Boat Club is the place for boat rides. Van Vihar National Park, Bharat Bhavan and the Manav Sangrahalaya are all close to its shores.
