Best time to visit Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar is at its easiest from November to February, when mornings are fresh and the temple walks are comfortable. The rest of the year is humid, not dry, and the calendar has a few festival weeks worth planning around.

November to February: the easy months

Clear skies, daytime highs in the high 20s °C and cool mornings. This is when the Old Town temples and the cave hills are pleasant to walk, and when the city's cultural festivals run: the Mukteswar Dance Festival in mid-January and the Rajarani Music Festival later that month. Rooms cost more and the temples are busier, but the weather is worth it.

March to mid-June: hot and humid

Bhubaneswar is not a dry-heat city. Temperatures climb to around 40 °C in April and May, and the air near the coast stays sticky. Afternoon thunderstorms, called kalbaisakhi, can blow in without much warning. If you come now, see the temples before 9 am, rest through the afternoon and go out again after 5 pm. Lingaraj's Rukuna Rath Yatra, a chariot procession on Ashokashtami, usually falls in March or April.

Mid-June to September: monsoon

The southwest monsoon usually reaches Odisha in mid-June, earlier than the July start some guides suggest. Rain comes in heavy bursts rather than all day, and the paddy fields around Dhauli turn bright green. Low-lying roads flood after a big downpour. Puri's Rath Yatra falls in this season, usually late June or July, and fills every hotel in the region.

October: a mixed month

Rain eases through October, but October and November are also the peak months for Bay of Bengal cyclones. Big storms have hit this coast in both months in recent years. Most weeks are fine; just check forecasts before you travel and keep plans flexible.

A note on the season cards

Some summaries describe Bhubaneswar's summer as dry. It is humid: pack for sweat, not dust. Light cotton, a spare shirt and plenty of water matter more than sun cream alone.

Questions

Bhubaneswar — FAQ

Is December a good time for Bhubaneswar?

One of the best. Days are warm, nights are cool, rain is rare, and you can combine the city with the Konark Festival on the coast in early December.

When does the monsoon start in Bhubaneswar?

Usually in the second or third week of June, and it lasts into September. July and August are the wettest months.

Should I worry about cyclones?

Only in the sense of checking forecasts. October, November and sometimes May carry the risk. Warnings are given days ahead, and the state is well practised at evacuations.
