About Junagarh Fort
Junagarh Fort was built between 1589 and 1594 by Raja Rai Singh, the sixth ruler of Bikaner, under the supervision of his minister Karan Chand. Unlike most major forts in Rajasthan, it stands on flat ground rather than a hilltop, protected by thick walls and a moat. It is known as one of the few forts in the region never taken by an invader.
Successive rulers added palaces inside the walls over the next three centuries. Rooms such as the Anup Mahal and Phool Mahal are covered in gold leaf, mirror-work, lacquer and painted ceilings, and the fort museum holds weapons, royal costumes and a First World War biplane. Most visitors explore the palaces with a guide or audio guide.
