Best time to visit Bodh Gaya
October to March is when Bodh Gaya is comfortable and at its liveliest. Within that window, the question is whether you want the crowds and ceremonies of December and January, or the quieter weeks either side.
❄️ Winter
RecommendedOct – Mar
Warm in October and March, cool and mostly dry from November to February — the comfortable peak season, with crisp mornings and evenings.
Pack: light layers with a jacket or shawl for early mornings and after dark.
Plan a winter day →☀️ Summer
Apr – Jun
Very hot and dry, often 40 °C+ by midday — the off-season on the plains. Best explored at dawn and dusk, resting through the afternoon.
Pack: loose light cottons, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and plenty of water.
Plan a summer day →🌧️ Monsoon
Jul – Sep
Warm and humid with on-and-off showers that cool the air and green the gardens — rain rarely lasts all day.
Pack: a compact umbrella or light rain shell, quick-dry clothes and grippy footwear.
Plan a monsoon day →October and November
The monsoon has gone, days are warm and nights begin to cool. This is a good time to come if you want the town without the winter crowds. Chhath Puja, Bihar's biggest festival, falls in October or November, and trains into Bihar fill up weeks ahead around it.
December and January
This is the busiest time in Bodh Gaya. Monks and pilgrims arrive from across Asia for chanting ceremonies and teachings under the Bodhi Tree, and the town fills with maroon and saffron robes. It is a remarkable time to be here, but rooms get booked far ahead and prices rise.
It is also the coldest time. Mornings are chilly and dense fog is common. Fog often delays trains through Gaya by several hours, and flights can be affected too. Keep a buffer day before any onward connection.
February and March
The crowds thin, the weather warms and the fog clears. February is one of the most pleasant months. By late March the afternoons are hot.
April to June
Very hot. Gaya often records some of Bihar's highest temperatures, with days above 40 °C in May and early June. If you come, visit the temple at dawn and after sunset, and rest in the middle of the day. Buddha Purnima, the full moon marking the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and death, usually falls in April or May and brings pilgrims despite the heat.
July to September
The monsoon brings humid heat and showers, and the gardens turn green. The town is at its quietest, which suits meditators.
Pitru Paksha in Gaya
Each September or October, Gaya fills with Hindu pilgrims for Pitru Paksha, when rites are performed for ancestors. It affects hotels and trains in the area, even though Bodh Gaya itself stays calm. In 2026 it runs from late September to about 10 October.
