What to Wear in Bodh Gaya

Bodh Gaya is a working pilgrimage site, so dress as you would for any temple: shoulders and knees covered, nothing too tight or showy. Beyond that, what you pack depends on the month, because a December morning and a May afternoon feel like different countries.

At the temples

The Mahabodhi Temple asks for modest dress. Cover your shoulders and knees, and skip shorts, short skirts and sleeveless tops. The same goes for the monasteries. Loose cotton trousers or a long skirt with a kurta or a plain shirt works for everyone. Many pilgrims wear white, and you will not look out of place in it.

Shoes

You take your shoes off at the Mahabodhi entrance and walk barefoot or in socks on stone and marble. Wear sandals or slip-ons you can take off quickly. In winter, bring a pair of warm socks, as the marble is cold before sunrise. In summer, the stone gets hot by late morning, so go early.

October to March

Days are pleasant, but early mornings and nights in December and January are cold, often with fog. Pack a warm layer, a shawl or fleece, and something for your head if you plan to sit under the Bodhi Tree at dawn. Late October and March can already be warm by midday.

April to June

This is the hot season, and Gaya is one of the hottest parts of Bihar. Wear loose, light cotton or linen, a hat and sunglasses, and carry water. Keep covered for the temple, but choose thin fabrics.

July to September

Warm, humid and rainy. Quick-dry clothes and an umbrella help. Carry a small cloth to dry your feet after walking barefoot on wet stone.

Buying local

Bihar is known for Bhagalpuri tussar silk, which has a soft, textured sheen. It makes a good souvenir, though Bhagalpur itself is far from here. Simple cotton kurtas and shawls are easy to find in the market near the temple. Browse the looks on this page for colours that work well against the brick and gold of the town.

Questions

Bodh Gaya — FAQ

Can I wear shorts in Bodh Gaya?

Around town, yes, but not at the Mahabodhi Temple or the monasteries. Cover your knees and shoulders there.

Do I need warm clothes for Bodh Gaya in winter?

Yes. December and January mornings and nights are cold and often foggy. A fleece or shawl and warm socks for the cold temple floor are worth packing.

What shoes are best for Bodh Gaya?

Sandals or slip-ons. You remove them at the Mahabodhi entrance and at many monasteries, so laces slow you down.
