Best time to visit Bomdila
Bomdila is best from October to April, when skies are clear and the roads are dry. Spring is the season for birds and flowers; the monsoon is the time to avoid.
❄️ Winter
RecommendedOct – Mar
Cold, with snow on the higher ground and some high passes and roads closed — beautiful, but pack and plan for it.
Pack: heavy insulated layers, gloves, a warm hat and waterproof boots.

Apr – Jun
The prime window — comfortable days and the higher roads open again, though pre-monsoon haze can hide the far peaks by May and June.
Pack: light layers by day and a warm jacket for cool evenings and altitude.

Jul – Sep
Lush and green but wet, with a real risk of landslides and roadblocks on mountain routes.
Pack: a waterproof shell, quick-dry layers and sturdy, grippy footwear.
Plan a monsoon day →October to November: clear and crisp
After the monsoon, the air clears and mountain views are at their best. Days are cool and pleasant, nights cold. This is a popular time for the Tawang circuit, so book rooms ahead. Apple and kiwi harvests may still be going on around Dirang.
December to February: cold and quiet
Winter brings sunny days and very cold nights. Snow falls in some years, both in Bomdila and on the road to Tawang. The black-necked cranes arrive in the Sangti valley near Dirang, usually from November and staying until around March. Losar, the Monpa new year, often falls in February.
March to May: flowers and birds
Rhododendrons and magnolias bloom on the hillsides, and Eaglenest has its peak birding season, when many species are singing and breeding. Camps at Eaglenest fill quickly, so book months ahead. Days are mild and showers begin by May.
June to September: monsoon
Heavy rain brings landslides on the road from Bhalukpong and onward to Tawang. Delays of hours are common, and the peaks hide in cloud. Eaglenest's camps usually shut in the wettest months. Only travel now with flexible dates.
Temperatures in brief
Summer days are mild and seldom warm; winter days can be pleasant in the sun, but temperatures fall fast after dark. Whatever the month, pack a warm layer for the evening and for the drive over Sela if you are going on to Tawang.
Planning notes
- Break the drive to Tawang with a night here to adjust to the height.
- Check road conditions before setting out, in every season.
- Book Eaglenest camps and a naturalist well ahead for spring.
