Where to Eat in Bomdila

Bomdila has a handful of simple restaurants, most around the market and near the monastery. Many travellers also eat in Dirang, where trout is the local speciality.

Not sure what to order? The Bomdila food guide starts from the dishes — what each one is, when to eat it, and which of these kitchens is known for it.

How eating works here

Most restaurants serve a wide menu: momos, thukpa, fried rice, North Indian curries and a few Monpa dishes. Kitchens close early, often by 8 in the evening, and earlier in winter. If you arrive late from Assam, ask your hotel to keep dinner.

Monpa food

Zan and cheese stews are home food first. If a menu does not list them, ask; some kitchens make them to order. Homestays around Bomdila and Dirang are a good place to try them.

On the road

The road from Bhalukpong and on to Tawang has dhabas and small tea stops, especially at Tenga, Rupa and Dirang. Food is simple: tea, noodles, momos, rice and dal. Carry snacks for long stretches.

Homestays and hotels

Many hotels in Bomdila and Dirang run their own kitchens, and homestays usually include meals. Tell your hosts in advance if you are vegetarian or avoid certain foods; Monpa cooking often uses meat stock, dried fish or cheese. If you want to try zan or a cheese stew, ask a day ahead.

Paying

Many places accept UPI, but signal can drop outside town. Keep some cash for dhabas and small shops.
