About the Garh Palace
The Garh Palace climbs the hillside below Taragarh Fort, its terraces, balconies and pavilions built and extended by Bundi's rulers over several centuries. You enter through a steep ramp and the Hathi Pol, a gate topped with carved elephants. Rudyard Kipling wrote that the palace looked like "the work of goblins rather than of men".
The highlight is the Chitrashala, a courtyard and set of rooms added by Rao Raja Ummed Singh in the 18th century. Its walls are covered in paintings in the Bundi style, in deep blues and greens, showing Krishna stories, court life, processions and hunting scenes. The palace terraces also give good views down over the blue houses of the old town.
