Best time to visit Chidambaram

The best time to visit Chidambaram is from late December to February, when the rain has cleared and the days are warm rather than scorching. It is the best season for the Nataraja Temple, the Sivaganga tank and a boat trip at Pichavaram.

Chidambaram is on the east coast, so its rainy season is different from much of India. The heavy rain comes with the northeast monsoon from October to December, and cyclones sometimes hit this stretch of coast in November and December. April to June is very hot and humid.

Best Month to Visit Chidambaram

January and February

The best months, with dry, warm days and slightly cooler mornings. Pongal falls in mid-January, and the Natyanjali dance festival usually begins around Maha Shivaratri in February or March.

March

It gets warmer, but mornings and evenings are still pleasant. A good time for Natyanjali if it falls in March that year.

April to June

The hottest months, with May the peak. Visit the temple early and late, and rest through the middle of the day. The Aani Thirumanjanam festival, with its chariot procession, usually falls in June or July.

July to September

Still hot, with only occasional showers, as the southwest monsoon mostly misses this coast. Crowds are low outside festival days.

October to December

The northeast monsoon brings the year's heaviest rain, and cyclones are possible in November and December. Boat trips at Pichavaram can stop in bad weather. The Arudra Darshan festival usually falls in December or early January.

When Is Chidambaram Most Crowded?

Chidambaram is busiest during its temple festivals: Arudra Darshan in the Tamil month of Margazhi (December–January), Aani Thirumanjanam in June–July, and the Natyanjali dance festival around Maha Shivaratri. Rooms fill quickly and the car streets close for the chariot processions.

Weekends and Tamil Nadu school holidays also bring more visitors to the temple and to Pichavaram. For a quieter visit, go on a weekday outside the festival weeks.
