About Chidambaram
Chidambaram is a temple town in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, close to the Bay of Bengal coast. Its whole layout grew around the Thillai Nataraja Temple, where Shiva is worshipped as Nataraja, the cosmic dancer. The temple covers a huge walled area in the centre of town, with four tall gopurams, the gold-roofed Chit Sabha and the Sivaganga tank, and the four car streets around it are still where daily life and the big chariot festivals happen.
Most visitors come for the temple, but the town is also a good base for the Pichavaram mangroves, about 15 km away, where you can row through narrow water channels under the mangrove roots. Add the Thillai Kali Temple on the northern edge of town, a walk past the old buildings of Annamalai University, and simple Tamil meals, idli and filter coffee in the eateries around the temple. One or two unhurried days cover it well.
Questions

What is Chidambaram famous for?

How many days are enough for Chidambaram?
1–2 days is enough. Spend one day on the Nataraja Temple, the Sivaganga tank and the Thillai Kali Temple, and half a day on a boat trip at Pichavaram. Many travellers combine Chidambaram with Puducherry or the temple towns around Kumbakonam.
What is the best time to visit Chidambaram?
Late December to February is the most comfortable time, with warm, mostly dry days. October to December is the northeast monsoon, with heavy rain and the odd cyclone, and April to June is very hot. See the best time to visit Chidambaram for a month-by-month guide.
How do I reach Chidambaram?
Chidambaram has its own railway station on the line between Chennai and Thanjavur, and trains from Chennai take about 4 hours. By road it is about 65 km from Puducherry and about 240 km from Chennai. The nearest large airports are Chennai and Tiruchirappalli.
What is the Chidambara Rahasya?
The Chidambara Rahasya, or 'secret of Chidambaram', is shown to devotees in the Nataraja Temple's inner shrine. Behind a curtain there is no idol, only a space hung with golden vilva leaves, which stands for Shiva as formless space. It is the reason Chidambaram is counted as the temple of the space (akasha) element.
