About the Thillai Kali Temple
The Thillai Kali Temple stands on the northern edge of Chidambaram, about 1 km from the Nataraja Temple. It is dedicated to the goddess Kali and is tied to the town's best-known legend: a dance contest between Shiva and Kali, after which Kali left for the edge of the town.
The goddess here is shown with four faces, and she is also known as Thillai Amman. The stone temple was built in the 13th century under the Kadava king Kopperunchinga. It is smaller and calmer than the Nataraja Temple, and many pilgrims visit both on the same day.
