What's on in Chilika
Chilika's festivals happen on the water. The biggest is a single day in January, when hundreds of boats carry pilgrims to the island of Kalijai.
Nothing dated is confirmed for Chilika right now, so here is the year instead — the fixtures that come round annually, and what each one means for a visit.
The year in Chilika
Chilika's calendar works around the monsoon — the big outdoor events sit either side of it, and the wettest weeks are the quietest ones for anything held in the open. Broadly, Oct – Mar is when visiting is most comfortable here, and that is when the calendar is busiest — which also means accommodation is most expensive and books furthest ahead.
Most of these follow lunar calendars and move by weeks from year to year, so treat the windows below as the season rather than the date, and confirm the year’s dates before you book around one.

Kalijai Makar Mela (mid-January)
On Makar Sankranti, usually 14 or 15 January, devotees cross the lagoon to the island temple of Maa Kalijai. Hundreds of boats leave from Barkul, Balugaon and other jetties from before dawn, many decorated for the day, and the island becomes a crowded fair of offerings, food stalls and music. For visitors, the sight of the boat procession is the main event. Go early, use a registered boat with life jackets and expect long waits for the return.
Winter bird festivals (January, some years)
Odisha has run a Chilika bird festival in some winters, with guided birdwatching, talks and events around Mangalajodi and Nalabana. It is not held every year on fixed dates; check with Odisha Tourism or the forest department before you plan around it.
Kartik Purnima (October or November)
On the full moon of Kartik, people across coastal Odisha float small boats of banana bark with lamps on the water at dawn, remembering the traders who once sailed from this coast to Southeast Asia. The festival is called Boita Bandana. Chilika's jetties and shores see local celebrations.
Raja Parba (mid-June)
A three-day festival in mid-June celebrating the earth and womanhood, with swings, new clothes and special cakes called poda pitha. It is a home and village festival, but you will see swings hung from trees in lagoon villages.
