What to Wear in Chilika

Most of a Chilika day is spent on an open boat with no shade. Dress for sun and spray, and keep colours muted if you are going to see the birds.

On the boats

Tourist boats at Chilika are mostly open motorboats with a thin canopy at best. The sun reflects off the water, so you burn faster than you expect. A wide-brimmed hat with a strap, sunglasses, a long-sleeved cotton or quick-dry shirt and sunscreen are the basics. Wear the life jacket the boatman offers; loose clothing under it is more comfortable.

For birdwatching

Birds react to bright colours and sudden movement. For Nalabana and Mangalajodi, choose olive, khaki, brown or grey, and avoid white and neon. Keep noise down too. A small cushion helps on the wooden benches of punted boats.

Footwear

Sandals or water shoes that can get wet. At the Satapada sea mouth you step onto a sandbar, and at Kalijai and Rambha's islands you often climb out onto rocks or wet sand. Leave good leather shoes at the guesthouse.

At Kalijai

The island temple is an active shrine. Cover your shoulders and knees and take your shoes off at the steps. A scarf that doubles as sun cover on the boat solves both.

By season

  • November to February: early mornings on the water can be cool and windy. Bring a light fleece or jacket for dawn trips, then strip down by mid-morning.
  • March to mid-June: hot and humid. Lightest cotton, a hat and plenty of water.
  • Mid-June to September: rain and wind. Quick-dry clothes and a rain shell; some boat trips may be cancelled.

Packing list

Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, dry bag for phone and camera, binoculars, water, a light layer for dawn, and a change of clothes in case of spray.
