About Chandravalli Caves

Chandravalli is a valley a few kilometres from Chitradurga town, set among bare rocky hills beside a small lake. It is an important archaeological site: excavations from the early 1900s onwards, completed under Mortimer Wheeler in 1947, found coins, painted pottery and other objects from several periods, including the Satavahana and Hoysala eras.

The main attraction for visitors is the Ankali Mutt, a cave temple set between two giant rocks and named after saints who came here to meditate. Its passages and small chambers go back into the rock and are dark inside. It is a quiet, cool place and a good contrast to the busy fort.
