Chitradurga
A rugged fort town in central Karnataka built among giant granite boulders — the 'Kallina Kote' (stone fort) of seven concentric walls, tales of the warrior Onake Obavva, and ancient Chandravalli caves.
Chitradurga is boulder-and-fort Karnataka: the labyrinthine seven-walled hill fort, the legend of Obavva who fought off invaders with a pestle, the Chandravalli caves, and North-Karnataka food.

About Chitradurga
Chitradurga is a fort town in central Karnataka, about 200 km north-west of Bengaluru on the highway to Pune. The town grew up at the foot of a hill of huge granite boulders, and on that hill the Nayaka rulers built Elusuttina Kote, the "fort of seven circles", with walls that wind between the rocks. The Nayakas held Chitradurga for more than 200 years until Hyder Ali of Mysore took the fort in 1779.
Most visitors come for the fort itself. Plan a morning inside the walls for Obavvana Kindi, the Hidimbeshwara Temple and the old water tanks, then drive out to the Chandravalli Caves a few kilometres away in the afternoon. With an extra half-day you can reach Vani Vilas Sagar, one of Karnataka's oldest dams. Between sights, eat what the region eats: jolada rotti, ragi mudde, bisi bele bath and hot mirchi bajji.
