About Obavvana Kindi
Obavvana Kindi is a narrow gap in the rocks inside Chitradurga Fort. According to local legend, during Hyder Ali's siege of the fort, Obavva, the wife of a guard, spotted enemy soldiers squeezing through this gap one by one. Armed only with an onake, a wooden pestle used for pounding grain, she struck down each soldier as he came through. "Kindi" means a small opening in Kannada.
The story is one of Karnataka's best-loved tales of courage, and Onake Obavva is honoured across the state, with Onake Obavva Jayanti marked on 11 November. The spot itself is small, so it is easy to combine with the rest of the fort. Expect school groups and families, especially on weekends.
