About Vani Vilas Sagar
Vani Vilas Sagar, also known as the Mari Kanive dam, is a stone masonry dam across the Vedavathi river, about 20 km west of Hiriyur. It was built by the Mysore Maharajas and completed in 1907, and it is the oldest dam in Karnataka that is still in use. The reservoir supplies drinking water to towns across Chitradurga district and irrigates farmland around Hiriyur.
The dam sits in a narrow gap between rocky hills, and the long curved wall with the wide reservoir behind it makes a calm, open view. The water level depends on the monsoon: the reservoir overflowed in 2022 for the first time since 1933, while in dry years it can be low. It is a peaceful half-day trip from Chitradurga.
