About Chitradurga Fort
Chitradurga Fort, known locally as Elusuttina Kote or the "fort of seven circles", spreads over a hill of huge granite boulders above the town. It was built up over several centuries and reached its present form under the Nayakas of Chitradurga, who ruled here until Hyder Ali of Mysore took the fort in 1779. Seven rings of stone walls, many gateways, watchtowers and hidden passages wind in and out of the rocks.
Inside the walls you will find temples such as Hidimbeshwara and Ekanatheshwari, old granaries, and a clever system of water tanks, including Gopalaswamy Honda and Akka-Tangi Honda, which stored rainwater for the garrison. Obavvana Kindi, the narrow gap linked to the legend of Onake Obavva, is also inside the fort. Plan for a long walk on bare rock with little shade.
