About Chittorgarh Fort

Chittorgarh Fort sits on a long, flat-topped hill about 180 m above the plains and is one of the largest forts in India. It was the capital of Mewar for centuries and is one of the six forts listed together by UNESCO as the Hill Forts of Rajasthan. A winding road climbs the hill through seven gateways, called pols, before reaching Ram Pol and the top.

Inside the walls are palaces, towers, temples and water tanks spread over a large area, linked by a road that loops around the hill. The fort was besieged three times, in 1303, 1535 and 1568, and its history of battles and jauhar is central to Rajput memory. Plan at least half a day, hire an auto or bring a car to move between the sights, and stay for the evening light-and-sound show if you can.
