Chittorgarh is Rajput glory and sacrifice: the vast hill fort, the Vijay and Kirti Stambha towers, tales of jauhar and Meera Bai, and hearty Rajasthani food.

About Chittorgarh

Chittorgarh is a small town in southern Rajasthan, and almost everyone comes here for one thing: Chittorgarh Fort. The fort covers a flat-topped hill about 180 m above the plains, with walls that run for roughly 13 km, and it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Hill Forts of Rajasthan. For centuries it was the capital of Mewar, before the rulers moved to Udaipur. It was besieged three times, and the stories of those sieges, of Rani Padmini, Meera Bai and Panna Dhai, are told all over the fort.

The fort is too big to see on foot in one go, so most visitors hire an auto-rickshaw or drive the road that loops around the top. The main stops are the Vijay Stambha and Kirti Stambha towers, the ruins of Rana Kumbha Palace, Padmini Palace beside its pool, and temples such as the Meera temple and Kalika Mata. Start early to beat the heat, stay for the evening light-and-sound show at Kumbha Palace, and eat a proper Rajasthani meal of dal baati churma or a thali back in town.
