Where to Eat in Chopta

There are no restaurants in Chopta in the usual sense. You eat at roadside dhabas, trail stalls and the kitchen of wherever you sleep.

Not sure what to order? The Chopta food guide starts from the dishes — what each one is, when to eat it, and which of these kitchens is known for it.

At Chopta

The dhabas along the road at Chopta are where most walkers eat before and after the Tungnath climb. Chopta Meadows Dhaba is listed for Garhwali meals, thalis, Maggi and chai, and opens early for people starting the walk. Most places here work the same way: a short menu, food cooked to order, and a plate of dal, rice and a vegetable if you ask for the thali.

On the Tungnath path

Small stalls line the path in the temple season. Tungnath View Point Dhaba is listed on the climb for thalis, phaanu, aloo ke gutke and hot tea. Stalls higher up sell little beyond tea, biscuits and Maggi, and prices rise with the height, since everything is carried up. In winter most of them are shut.

At Sari and Deoria Tal

Sari, the village at the start of the Deoria Tal walk, is run largely by local families, who keep homestays, camps and dhabas. Sari Village Dhaba is listed for Garhwali food, Maggi and chai. Deoria Tal Camp Kitchen serves thalis and warm meals to trekkers staying in the camps; with camping at the lake now banned, ask where exactly it runs this season. Homestay dinners in Sari are often the best Garhwali food of the trip.

How to plan meals

Eat breakfast at Chopta before the climb, even if it is dark. Carry snacks and water for the walk, since stalls may be closed early or late in the season. Plan dinner where you are sleeping, as kitchens close early and walking the road at night is cold and dark.

Paying

Pay in cash. There is no ATM at Chopta or Sari, and card machines are rare. UPI works only when the network does, which is not often. Keep small notes for tea stalls.

Before you go

Opening months follow the trekking season. Many dhabas close from December to March, and some shut in the monsoon. For what to order, start with the Chopta food guide.
