Best time to visit Coonoor
The best time to visit Coonoor is from December to May. January and February are usually the driest and clearest months, and March to May is warm by day and pleasant in the evenings, which is also when crowds are biggest.
Coonoor is on the eastern side of the Nilgiris, so it gets less rain than the western hills from June to September. Its wettest months are October and November, when the northeast monsoon brings heavy rain and landslides can close the ghat road and cancel the toy train.

January and February
These are the driest and clearest months, with sunny days and cold nights that can drop to around 10°C. Views from Dolphin's Nose and Lamb's Rock are at their best. Pack warm layers for the evenings.
March to May
Days are at their warmest, usually in the low to mid-20s °C, and afternoon showers become more common. This is the peak season, as families come up from the plains to escape the heat. The fruit show at Sim's Park is usually held in late May.
June to September
The hills turn deep green, with mist, drizzle and passing showers. Coonoor gets much less of the southwest monsoon than the western side of the Nilgiris, and June and July are fairly light. Rain picks up again in September.
October and November
These are the wettest months of the year, with long spells of heavy rain. Catherine Falls runs fullest, but views are often lost in cloud, and landslides can block the Mettupalayam road and stop the toy train. Keep your plans flexible and check the weather before you travel.
December
The rain eases and the air turns cool and fresh. Days are pleasant, nights are cold, and the town fills up for Christmas and New Year.
When Is Coonoor Most Crowded?
Coonoor is busiest from April to June, during school holidays, and around Christmas, New Year and Pongal. Long weekends bring traffic jams on the ghat roads, and toy train seats sell out early. Tourist vehicles entering the Nilgiris need an e-pass, and numbers have been capped in busy periods, so check the current rules before you drive up.
For a quieter trip, visit on weekdays in January, February or early March, and head to the viewpoints early in the day.
