Coonoor
A quieter Nilgiri hill station below Ooty — terraced tea gardens, cliff-edge viewpoints, a botanical park and the UNESCO toy train winding through the blue hills.
Coonoor is tea-country calm: Sim's Park, Dolphin's Nose and Lamb's Rock viewpoints, the heritage Nilgiri railway, tea-estate tastings, and cool mountain air.

About Coonoor
Coonoor is a tea town in the Nilgiris of Tamil Nadu, at about 1,850 m on the eastern side of the hills. It is the first stop for the Nilgiri Mountain Railway after its steep climb from Mettupalayam, and it is a working centre of the Nilgiri tea trade, with tea estates running down the slopes on every side. It is lower and a little warmer than Ooty, about 19 km away, and much quieter. The town is in two parts: busy Lower Coonoor around the railway station, bus stand and market, and greener Upper Coonoor around Bedford and Sim's Park.
Most of what visitors come for sits on one road out of town. Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose are cliff viewpoints over deep valleys, and from Dolphin's Nose you can see Catherine Falls across the gorge on the Kotagiri side. Spend a morning on the viewpoints, an afternoon in Sim's Park and a tea estate, and an evening in Bedford with a cup of Nilgiri tea and some varkey. If you can, arrive or leave on the toy train, which is steam-hauled on the rack section below Coonoor.
Questions
Coonoor — FAQ
What is Coonoor famous for?
Coonoor is famous for its tea estates, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Sim's Park and the Dolphin's Nose and Lamb's Rock viewpoints. It is also known for Nilgiri tea, homemade chocolate and varkey biscuits, and as a quieter base than Ooty for exploring the Nilgiris.
How many days are enough for Coonoor?
2 days is enough for Sim's Park, the viewpoints, a tea estate and a walk around Bedford. Add a third day for a toy train ride or a day trip to Ooty or Kotagiri.
What is the best time to visit Coonoor?
December to May is the most reliable time, with January and February the driest and clearest. June to September brings mist and showers, and October and November are the wettest months, when landslides can close roads and cancel trains. See the best time to visit Coonoor for a month-by-month guide.
How do I reach Coonoor?
The nearest airport is Coimbatore, about 70 km away, and the nearest main railway station is Mettupalayam, about 34 km away at the foot of the hills. From Mettupalayam you can drive up the ghat road or take the Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train, which stops at Coonoor on its way to Ooty. Seats on the toy train fill fast, so book early.
Do I need an e-pass to drive to Coonoor?
Usually, yes. Tourist vehicles registered outside the Nilgiris have needed an e-pass to enter the district since 2024, and there have been daily limits on vehicle numbers in busy periods. The rules have changed several times, so check the latest position on the Tamil Nadu e-pass website before you travel. Travellers on buses and trains are generally not affected.
