About Catherine Falls
Catherine Falls is a two-tiered waterfall about 250 feet high, on the Kotagiri side of the valley from Coonoor. It is named after Catherine Cockburn, the wife of M.D. Cockburn, who is said to have introduced coffee planting to this part of the Nilgiris.
Most visitors from Coonoor see the falls from Dolphin's Nose, where they appear across the gorge with forest and tea slopes all around. The top of the falls can be reached from the Kotagiri side, near Aravenu, with a walk from the road, but it is a longer trip from Coonoor. The falls run fullest after heavy rain, especially in October and November, and can thin to a trickle in the dry months.
