Watch the engine change at Coonoor station for close-up photos of the locomotive.

Stay on the platform and never walk on the tracks.

Check for cancellations in the rainy months, when landslides can close the line.

About the Nilgiri Mountain Railway

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs for 46 km from Mettupalayam, at the foot of the hills, through Coonoor to Ooty. It opened to Coonoor in 1899 and was extended to Ooty in 1908. Between Kallar and Coonoor it climbs gradients of up to 1 in 12 using a rack-and-pinion system, the only rack railway in India. Since 2005 it has been part of the Mountain Railways of India UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Coonoor is where the line changes character. Trains from Mettupalayam are hauled up the rack section by steam engines, and at Coonoor the steam engine is usually swapped for a diesel for the rest of the run to Ooty. The blue-and-cream coaches, the old station and the engine change make Coonoor one of the best places on the line for photos. You can also board here for the shorter ride to Ooty.
