Good to know

Local tips

Come for the 4:30 pm prayer if you cannot face the dawn session, and sit in quietly.

Take your shoes off before entering the temple, and wherever signs ask you to on the pagoda.

Put your camera away in the prayer room while the drumming is on.

Walk clockwise around the pagoda, as the monks and other Buddhist visitors do.

Climb to the upper terrace on a clear morning for a view over town to the snow peaks.

Take a taxi up and walk back down through Jalapahar if you want to save your legs.

Carry a warm layer, because the pagoda sits on an exposed ridge and gets windy.

A Japanese stupa on Jalapahar

The Peace Pagoda stands on the slopes of Jalapahar, on the southern edge of Darjeeling, about ten minutes' drive from the town centre. It is one of many peace pagodas built around the world by the Nipponzan Myohoji order. That Japanese Buddhist order was founded by the monk Nichidatsu Fujii. He laid the foundation stone here in 1972, and the pagoda opened in 1992. It is 28.5 metres high, the tallest free-standing structure in Darjeeling.

What you see

The pagoda is a broad white dome on a raised terrace, with steps and a walkway all around. Set into its sides are four large gilded panels of the Buddha: sitting, sleeping, standing and in meditation. Climb to the upper terrace for a view over the town and, on a clear day, the Kanchenjunga range.

The Japanese temple and the drum prayers

A short walk before the pagoda is the two-storey Nipponzan Myohoji temple, from 1972. Prayers are usually held from about 4:30 to 6 am and again from about 4:30 to 6:30 pm. Monks beat a large drum and chant, and visitors are welcome to sit, take a hand drum and join in. Photography is allowed in the temple but not in the prayer room during prayers.

Getting there

Take a taxi, or walk up through Jalapahar from the Mall along steep lanes. From the gate it is a short walk up a narrow road lined with prayer flags. Entry is free, and the grounds usually open from early morning until about 7 pm.

Why go

It is peaceful and rarely crowded, a good counterweight to Chowrasta and Tiger Hill. Pair it with the evening prayers if you are short of time.
