Good to know

Local tips

Book your jeep the evening before, as morning passes to the top are limited.

Wear a hat, gloves and a proper jacket, because it is near freezing before dawn in winter.

Choose the free open platform if you want the widest view and don't mind the wind.

Look west for Everest a few minutes before sunrise, when the far peaks catch the light.

Stay ten minutes after sunrise, when the crowd leaves and the colour on the snow is still good.

Ask your driver to stop at Ghum and Batasia Loop on the way down to save a second trip.

Check the sky from your hotel at 3 am, and if it is thick cloud, save your dawn for another day.

The highest point near Darjeeling

Tiger Hill rises to about 2,590 metres above Ghum, about 11 km from Darjeeling town. It is inside the Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary. People come for one thing: dawn over the Kanchenjunga range. Before the sun reaches the town, the top of Kanchenjunga turns pink, then orange, then white, one peak at a time. On the clearest mornings Everest, Lhotse and Makalu appear as small points far to the west. Kanchenjunga looks higher than Everest because it is much closer.

Getting there before dawn

Most visitors go by shared or reserved jeep, booked the evening before through a hotel or a stand near Chowrasta. Since 2019 the number of vehicles allowed up each morning has been capped, and drivers need a daily pass. So jeeps leave early, usually around 3:30 to 4 am, and a little later in winter. Traffic at the top can be heavy, and you may have to walk the last part from where the driver parks. Many tours stop at Ghum and Batasia Loop on the way back.

Where to watch from

There is a multi-storey viewing tower with ticketed floors, and an open platform beside it that is free. The open platform has the clearer view but is cold and exposed. The ticketed floors are warmer but crowded. Tea and coffee sellers work the crowd.

Walking it

Fit walkers sometimes hike up from Ghum or Jorebunglow in the dark, about an hour or more of steady climbing. Go with someone who knows the path, carry a torch and dress very warmly.

When it's worth it

Between October and early December the odds of a clear view are good. In spring there is often haze. From June to September cloud usually hides everything.
