Local tips

Agree the boat rate and the length of the ride with the boatman before you step in.

Go on a weekday morning to avoid the long weekend queue for boats.

Keep your phone in a waterproof pouch or on a lanyard, because a dropped phone is gone.

Ask the boatman to stop in the shallows, where the water looks clearest.

Sit still and keep your weight low; the boats are narrow and tip easily.

Carry cash for the boat, since there is often no signal for UPI at the water's edge.

After heavy rain, even in the dry season, wait a day for the water to settle before you judge it.

The river

The Umngot comes down from the Khasi and Jaintia hills and leaves India at Dawki, flowing on into Bangladesh. In the dry season the water is so clear that the stones on the bed look close enough to touch. Each boat throws a sharp shadow onto the riverbed, which is why it seems to float in mid-air. It is also a working river: local fishermen use it, and boats from the Bangladeshi side are often in view downstream.

How the boat ride works

Boats leave from the bank just below the old bridge. They are narrow wooden rowing boats, each with a local boatman. You pay a fixed rate for the whole boat, not per person, so a group of three or four splits the cost and a solo traveller pays the full amount. A standard ride is a short loop of around half an hour. You can agree a longer trip upstream before you set off. Wear the life jacket; ask for one if it is not offered.

When it is clear

The water is clearest from November to February and usually still good in March and April. From June to September the river is high and brown, and boating is often suspended for safety. It starts to clear again in October. Clear-water weekends are crowded, and there can be a long wait for a boat.

Keep it clean

The villages along the Umngot depend on the river and work to keep it clean. Nothing goes into the water: no plastic, no food wrappers, no soap. Take your rubbish back to town with you.

For quieter water and swimming, go upstream to Shnongpdeng. For the classic view from above, walk onto the Dawki bridge.
