Best Photo Spots in Dehradun

Dehradun gives you two kinds of photo: grand buildings in wide green grounds, and cold streams running between rock walls. Plan the buildings for soft light and the gorges for the hours when the sun reaches down into them.

Buildings and grounds

The Forest Research Institute is the city's best-known photograph. Its long front of red-brick arches needs distance, so start at the far edge of the lawn and shoot wide. Inside, the corridors and courtyards make repeating arches that work in any light. Come on a weekday morning, when the campus is quiet.

At Mindrolling Monastery, the Great Stupa rises in white and gold tiers above a garden. Late afternoon gives it warm colour. Walk around it clockwise, as Buddhists do, and ask before photographing monks or shooting inside the shrine rooms.

The water sights

Robber's Cave is a narrow gorge, and the walls keep it in shade for much of the day. Late morning to early afternoon is when light falls onto the stream. Expect to be standing in water, so carry your phone in a waterproof pouch and keep a strap on your camera.

Sahastradhara is about water dripping from rock ledges. Go early, before the bathing crowds fill the pools, and try a slower shutter if your camera allows it. After the 2025 cloudburst, parts of the riverside changed, so look at what is open now rather than copying old photos.

The cave temple

Tapkeshwar is a working Shiva temple. Keep your camera away from the cave shrine and from people at prayer. The steps down to the Tamsa stream and the temple front make better pictures anyway.

Practical notes

Weekends and holidays are crowded at every water site. Sunday afternoons at Robber's Cave and Sahastradhara are the busiest of all. For a clear view of the hills behind the city, go after rain in October or on a crisp winter morning. Summer haze often hides the Mussoorie ridge. Do not go into any stream bed when it is raining hard upstream.

Questions

Dehradun — FAQ

Can I see the Himalayan snow peaks from Dehradun?

Not really. The city faces the Mussoorie ridge, which blocks the high peaks. For snow views, go up to Mussoorie on a clear morning.

Are pre-wedding shoots allowed at the Forest Research Institute?

Professional and commercial shoots usually need permission from the institute in advance. Casual photos by visitors in the open areas are fine.

Will my phone get wet at Robber's Cave?

It might. You walk in the stream, sometimes knee-deep, over slippery stones. Carry it in a waterproof pouch or a zip bag.

Which Dehradun photo spot is best on a rainy day?

The Forest Research Institute, where the covered corridors keep you dry. Avoid the stream-bed sights in heavy rain.
