Local tips

Check the weather alerts and ask locally before going in the monsoon.

Stay out of the water if it has rained hard upstream or the river turns muddy.

Go on a weekday morning; Sundays bring big crowds to the pools.

Confirm the ropeway is running before you plan the trip around it.

Wear sandals with grip, as the rocks by the dripping ledges are slippery.

Bring a towel and a change of clothes if you plan to bathe in the sulphur pools.

Combine the visit with Robber's Cave, which is on the same north side of the city.

The thousand-fold spring

Sahastradhara means thousand-fold stream. It sits on the Baldi river about 14 km north-east of Dehradun. The main sight is a line of limestone ledges and small caves where water drips steadily from the rock, like rain falling from a roof. Nearby, springs rich in sulphur feed pools where people bathe. The water has a faint smell of sulphur, and many visitors believe it helps skin problems. The river has been channelled into shallow pools, and the banks are lined with snack stalls and changing rooms.

The ropeway

A ropeway climbs from the riverside to a hilltop with an amusement area and views over the valley. It had a maintenance break in early 2026 and resumed in March, but check that it is running before you go.

The 2025 cloudburst

On the night of 15–16 September 2025, a cloudburst above Sahastradhara sent a flash flood down the valley. Several hotels and shops in the Sahastradhara market were damaged or swept away, roads broke up, and a bridge collapsed. The worst damage was in Karligad village, about 5 km away. Several people in the district died or went missing, and hundreds were moved to safety. The area has been rebuilding since. Some places you may see in older photos have changed or gone.

Visiting safely

Outside the monsoon, Sahastradhara is a busy, easy-going family outing. From July to September, keep an eye on weather alerts and ask locally before going, and stay out of the water after heavy rain upstream. Sundays and holidays are very crowded. Come on a weekday morning for a calmer visit. Bring a towel and spare clothes if you plan to get in the water, and keep an eye on children around the pools.
