About St. John in the Wilderness
St. John in the Wilderness is a stone church built in 1852 in a deodar forest at Forsyth Ganj, on the road between lower Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj. It is built in the neo-Gothic style, with grey stone walls, a squat bell tower and stained-glass windows from Belgium, given by Lady Elgin.
The church survived the great Kangra earthquake of 1905, though its tower was damaged. In the graveyard you will find the memorial of Lord Elgin, a Viceroy of India who died in Dharamshala in 1863. It is a quiet, shaded stop and a very different side of Dharamshala from the Tibetan town up the hill.
