About the Dwarkadhish Temple

The Dwarkadhish Temple, also called the Jagat Mandir, is the main temple of Dwarka and one of the Char Dham, the four holiest pilgrimage sites in Hinduism. It is dedicated to Krishna as the king of Dwarka. Tradition says the first shrine here was built by Krishna's great-grandson, Vajranabh. The present temple, five storeys of carved limestone and sandstone standing on 72 pillars, was rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries after an earlier temple was destroyed.

The temple is known for the long flag on its spire, made from 52 yards of cloth and marked with the sun and the moon. It is changed several times a day, usually five, and families sponsor each new flag. Pilgrims usually bathe at Gomti Ghat, climb the 56 steps to the Swarga Dwar (the gate of heaven) and leave through the Moksha Dwar (the gate of liberation) into the market. Phones are not allowed inside, so take your photos before you go in.
