Local tips

Bathe only in the shallow area inside the safety barriers, and never at high tide.

Stay off the lower rocky steps when the waves are high, as they are slippery and people have been swept off.

Keep children close to you at the water's edge.

Do not wade across the river mouth to Panchkui at low tide, as the water can rise quickly.

Wear the life jacket if you take a boat ride on the river, as it is compulsory.

Ask before photographing people who are bathing or praying.

Wear sandals that are easy to slip off and grip well on wet stone.

About Gomti Ghat

Gomti Ghat is the long flight of steps where the Gomti river meets the Arabian Sea, just below the Dwarkadhish Temple. Pilgrims traditionally bathe here before darshan and then climb the 56 steps to the temple's Swarga Dwar. Small shrines line the ghat, including the Samudra Narayan (Sangam Narayan) temple at the point where the river meets the sea, and the Chakra Narayan temple. The inlet was a harbour until the 19th century, and boat rides still run on the water.

The ghat is at its liveliest in the early morning, when families bathe and make offerings, and around sunset, when the light turns warm on the temple above. The water is tidal, and strong currents and waves have swept people off the steps, so treat it with care. The Sudama Setu footbridge crosses the river to Panchkui (Panchnad Tirth) on the far bank, but it has been closed for repairs for long spells since 2022.
