About Nageshwar Jyotirlinga
Nageshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the holiest shrines of Shiva, and stands about 16 km from Dwarka on the road towards Okha and Bet Dwarka. Legend says Shiva appeared here to defeat the demon Daruka, who had imprisoned his devotee Supriya, and stayed on in the form of a Jyotirlinga. The lingam is kept in a sanctum set below the level of the main hall.
The temple is easy to spot from the road because of the giant seated Shiva statue, about 25 m tall, that rises over its grounds. It is one of the most photographed sights around Dwarka and a regular stop on the half-day trip to Bet Dwarka. Two other temples, Aundha Nagnath in Maharashtra and Jageshwar in Uttarakhand, are also linked with the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, and many devotees visit all three.
