About the Rukmini Devi Temple

The Rukmini Devi Temple stands on its own about 2 km outside Dwarka and is dedicated to Rukmini, Krishna's chief queen. It is small but richly carved: gods and goddesses cover the walls, and bands of carved human figures and elephants run around the base of the spire. The temple is usually dated to around the 12th century.

A legend explains why Rukmini's temple stands apart from Krishna's. The sage Durvasa, who felt slighted when he was not offered water first, cursed Rukmini and Krishna to live apart. The temple is also known for its jal daan custom, in which devotees are asked to donate water, and local belief holds that a pilgrimage to Dwarka is complete only after a visit here.
