Best time to visit Gangtok
Gangtok is mild all year, so the best time depends on views, rain and the road more than on heat or cold. October to December and March to May are the easy months, and June to September is the hard one.
❄️ Winter
RecommendedOct – Mar
Cold, with snow on the higher ground and some high passes and roads closed — beautiful, but pack and plan for it.
Pack: heavy insulated layers, gloves, a warm hat and waterproof boots.
Shines now: Nathula Pass
Plan a winter day →☀️ Summer
RecommendedApr – Jun
The prime window — comfortable days and the higher roads open again, though pre-monsoon haze can hide the far peaks by May and June.
Pack: light layers by day and a warm jacket for cool evenings and altitude.
Shines now: Nathula Pass
Plan a summer day →🌧️ Monsoon
Jul – Sep
Lush and green but wet, with a real risk of landslides and roadblocks on mountain routes.
Pack: a waterproof shell, quick-dry layers and sturdy, grippy footwear.
Shines now: Tsomgo Lake
Plan a monsoon day →October to December
This is the clearest time of year. The rain has washed the haze away, and Kanchenjunga shows on most mornings. Days are sunny and mild, and nights get cold by December. Dashain and Tihar fall in October or November, along with the Bengal holiday crowds, so book early. Kagyed dances and Losoong, the Sikkimese New Year, fall in December.
January and February
Winter nights in town drop to about 4–7°C, and days can turn from sunshine to rain within hours. Snow in Gangtok itself is rare. It fell in only a handful of years in recent decades. Up the high road, Tsomgo Lake is frozen and snow can close Nathu La for days. Enchey's Cham dance and Losar usually fall in these weeks or early March.
March to May
Spring is mild and busy. Rhododendrons flower on the high road, and on clear days the town is at its most comfortable. Haze from the plains builds through April and May and often hides the far peaks. Rain starts to rise in May. Ice on Tsomgo can last into May, with alpine flowers coming up around it after that.
June to September
The monsoon brings heavy, steady rain, and July is the wettest month. Landslides often cut NH10, the one main road in, sometimes for days. The high road to Tsomgo and Nathu La also closes at short notice. Gangtok is green and quiet, and hotels are cheap. Only come with spare days and flexible bookings. Saga Dawa and Pang Lhabsol fall in these months.
For the Tsomgo and Nathu La trip
Permits are issued day by day and weather overrides them. Whatever the month, keep one spare day in your plan so a closed road does not cost you the trip.

Is April a good month for Gangtok?
Yes, for mild weather and rhododendrons. Haze often hides Kanchenjunga by April, so if the mountain view matters most, come in October or November.
