Where to Eat in Gangtok

Most of Gangtok's eating is on or just off MG Marg, within a few minutes' walk of each other. For Sikkimese home dishes rather than Tibetan staples, go to Nimtho.

Not sure what to order? The Gangtok food guide starts from the dishes — what each one is, when to eat it, and which of these kitchens is known for it.

On MG Marg

Three of the four places listed are on or just off the boulevard, so you can pick by what you want. Taste of Tibet is the momo and thukpa stop, a small, busy room that fills up at lunch and again after dark. Roll House is a quick counter for rolls, momos and sel roti, the kind of place you eat standing or on the go. Café Live & Loud is a slower meal with coffee, comfort food and live music on some evenings. It works well when rain has stopped the walk.

For Sikkimese food

Nimtho, in the Development Area, cooks the home dishes that street counters don't: phagshapa, gundruk soup and a mixed Sikkimese platter. If you only have one sit-down meal in Gangtok, make it this one, because momos you can eat anywhere in the hills.

Timing

Gangtok eats early. Many kitchens stop taking orders by about 9 pm, and some close earlier on quiet nights. Plan dinner for around 7 pm. Lunch is easy on MG Marg on any day. Opening hours change, so check on the day.

Eating on the Tsomgo and Nathu La trip

The day trip starts early and returns mid-afternoon. Kiosks at Tsomgo Lake and along the road sell tea, instant noodles and momos. Eat something light at altitude, drink water, and have a proper meal of thukpa or rice back in town.

Manners on MG Marg

MG Marg is a no-littering, no-spitting, no-smoking zone, and people follow the rules. Carry your wrappers until you find a bin. Don't smoke outside a café on the boulevard, even if you see someone else do it.
