Temples in Goa

Goa is known for its churches, but it is also home to some of the most important Hindu temples on the Konkan coast. Many were rebuilt in the green hills around Ponda, away from Portuguese-ruled areas, and their white towers and tall lamp pillars look quite different from temples elsewhere in India.

On one day you can see the Baroque churches of Old Goa and the temples of Ponda, which are under an hour apart by road. All of them are active places of worship, so dress modestly and follow the rules at each one.

Shri Mangueshi Temple, in Priol near Ponda, is dedicated to Lord Mangesh, a form of Shiva. It is known for its white lamp tower (deepastambha), temple tank and quiet hillside setting.

Shri Shantadurga Temple, in Kavlem near Ponda, is dedicated to Goddess Shantadurga, a peaceful form of Durga. Its large courtyard, domed roof and lamp tower make it one of the most visited temples in Goa.
