Goa mixes Portuguese-Catholic and Konkani-Hindu culture; breezy resort styles rule, with Konkani seafood, vindaloo and bebinca.

About Goa
Goa is India's smallest state, not a single city, and most trips split it into two halves. North Goa has the busier beaches like Baga, Candolim and Vagator, the forts at Aguada and Chapora, and the villages of Assagao and Anjuna. South Goa is quieter, with longer, calmer beaches such as Palolem. In between sit Panaji, the small riverside capital with its Portuguese-era Latin quarter, and Old Goa, whose churches and convents are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Four and a half centuries of Portuguese rule left whitewashed churches, pastel houses with balconies and a cooking style built on vinegar, coconut and chilli. Konkani Hindu culture runs alongside it, with temples in the green hills around Ponda and spring festivals like Shigmo. Plan a day for Old Goa and Panaji, a day or two on the northern beaches and forts, and time in the south to slow down. After the monsoon, add a trip inland to Dudhsagar Falls on the Karnataka border.
Questions
Goa — FAQ
What is Goa famous for?
Goa is famous for its beaches, its Portuguese-era churches in Old Goa, forts such as Aguada and Chapora, and its food, especially Goan fish curry, pork vindaloo, prawn balchão and bebinca. It is also known for its relaxed pace of life, which locals call susegad.
How many days are enough for Goa?
4–5 days is a comfortable first trip: one day for Old Goa and Panaji, two for the North Goa beaches and forts, and one or two in South Goa. Add a day for Dudhsagar Falls between October and May.
What is the best time to visit Goa?
November to February is the most comfortable time, with dry, sunny days and a calm sea. October and March are quieter shoulder months, April and May are hot and humid, and June to September is the monsoon, when swimming in the sea is not allowed. See the best time to visit Goa for a month-by-month guide.
How do I reach Goa?
Goa has two airports: Dabolim, near Vasco da Gama, and Manohar International Airport at Mopa in North Goa. The main railway stations are Madgaon (Margao) for South Goa, and Thivim and Karmali for North Goa and Old Goa. Buses and cars also come in from Mumbai, Pune and Bengaluru.
Should I stay in North Goa or South Goa?
Stay in North Goa if you want busier beaches, cafés, markets and easy trips to the forts. Choose South Goa for quieter, cleaner-feeling beaches like Palolem and a slower pace. Many visitors split their stay between the two, with Panaji and Old Goa in the middle.
