Best Month to Visit Gwalior

October and November

The rain has ended, the countryside is still green and the air is clear. October afternoons can still reach around 34 °C, but November is pleasant, with warm days and cool evenings. Diwali usually falls in one of these months.

December and January

The coolest months, with sunny days around 22–25 °C and cold nights that average about 8 °C and sometimes fall close to freezing. Mornings can be foggy, which can delay trains and hide the views from the fort. The Tansen Samaroh fills the city with classical music in mid-December.

February and March

Days warm up quickly, from about 27 °C in February to 33 °C by March, while mornings stay fresh. It is a good time for photography and long walks on the fort. Holi usually falls in March.

April to June

The hottest months of the year. Average highs are about 39 °C in April and 42 °C in May, and temperatures have reached 48 °C. Sightsee at dawn and in the evening, and save indoor visits like Jai Vilas Palace for the middle of the day.

July to September

The monsoon brings heavy showers, especially in July and August, with hot, humid spells in between. The hills around the fort turn green, but stone paths can be slippery. The rain usually eases through September.

When Is Gwalior Most Crowded?

Gwalior is busiest in mid-December, when the Tansen Samaroh brings in music lovers and hotels fill up, and over the Christmas and New Year holidays. The fort and Jai Vilas Palace are also busier on weekends, long weekends and around Diwali.

For a quieter trip, visit on a weekday in November or February and reach the fort early in the morning. See events and festivals in Gwalior for the festival calendar.
