Temples in Halebidu

Halebidu was a royal Hoysala city, and its temples show both the Hindu and Jain faiths the Hoysala kings supported. The Hoysaleswara Temple is the centrepiece, with two Shiva shrines side by side and some of the most detailed carving in India. A short walk away are the smaller Kedareshwara Temple and a group of three Jain basadis.

The Hoysaleswara Temple is a protected monument and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but the shrines still hold Shiva lingas, so treat it as a place of worship. Dress modestly and remove your shoes before going in.

Famous Temples in Halebidu

Hoysaleswara Temple was begun around 1121 CE during the reign of King Vishnuvardhana. It has two shrines, Hoysaleswara and Shantaleswara, each with its own Nandi pavilion outside. The outer walls are carved in long horizontal bands of elephants, lions, horsemen and scrolls, with larger panels above showing gods, dancers and scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagavata Purana.

Kedareshwara Temple, about half a kilometre from the main temple, was built in 1219 CE by King Veera Ballala II and his queen Abhinava Ketaladevi. It is smaller and star-shaped, with finely carved walls, and it is usually very quiet.

The Jain basadis are a group of three Jain temples next to the Kedareshwara Temple, dedicated to Parshvanatha, Shantinatha and Adinatha. The Parshvanatha basadi is known for its polished, lathe-turned black pillars that shine like mirrors.
