About Virupaksha Temple

Virupaksha Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Virupaksha and is the oldest and most important temple in Hampi. Unlike most of the ruins, it has stayed in worship for centuries, and its tall gateway tower, or gopuram, still stands at the western end of Hampi Bazaar.

Inside are large courtyards, pillared halls and painted ceilings, and the temple is busy with pilgrims, priests and festivals through the year. Hemakuta Hill, right next to the temple, is dotted with smaller shrines and gives one of the best views of the gopuram, especially in the late afternoon.
