About Vittala Temple
Vittala Temple, also called Vijaya Vittala Temple, is the best-known monument in Hampi. Built in the 16th century and dedicated to Vishnu as Vittala, it is famous for its stone chariot, which stands in the main courtyard and has become the symbol of Hampi.
The temple's halls are covered in fine carvings, and the main hall has the famous musical pillars, which were said to ring when tapped. To protect them, tapping is no longer allowed, and the stone chariot is behind a barrier. The temple sits near the river, north-east of Hampi Bazaar, and is reached by road and an electric buggy, or by a walk along the Tungabhadra.
