Best time to visit Hogenakkal
The best time to visit Hogenakkal is usually October to March, when the weather is comfortable and the river still carries good water. The falls are fullest from July to September, when dams upstream in Karnataka release water, but coracle rides and bathing are often banned while the river is in spate.
April and May are the hottest months, and the river can shrink to thin streams between bare rock. Whatever the month, check the latest river conditions a day or two before you go, as bans can start or lift at short notice.

October to December
The heat eases and the river usually still has plenty of water after the monsoon. This is also the northeast monsoon season, so expect some rainy days, and fresh dam releases can still bring short bans on coracle rides.
January to March
Usually the most reliable months. Days are warm and dry, mornings are pleasant and coracle rides generally run. The water level slowly falls as the season goes on.
April to June
The hottest time of the year, with afternoons close to 40 °C. The river is often at its lowest, and the falls can shrink to thin streams across exposed rock. Visit early in the morning and rest through the afternoon.
July to September
The falls are at their widest and loudest when water from Karnataka's dams arrives. It is a powerful sight from the viewpoints, but coracle rides and bathing are often banned, sometimes for days or weeks at a time. Check before you travel.
When Is Hogenakkal Most Crowded?
Hogenakkal is busiest on weekends, public holidays and school holidays, when day-trippers arrive from Bengaluru, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Salem. Aadi Perukku in early August brings very large crowds to the riverbank, and the Pongal holidays in mid-January are usually busy as well.
For a quieter visit, go on a weekday and reach the falls early in the morning, before the coracle queues build up.
Questions
Hogenakkal — FAQ
When are coracle rides banned at Hogenakkal?
Rides and bathing are banned whenever the river rises too high, most often between July and September when Karnataka releases water from its dams. Bans can also come with later releases. The district administration announces them, so check the news before you go.
Is Hogenakkal worth visiting in summer?

Is there water in Hogenakkal Falls all year?
The Kaveri flows all year, but the amount changes a lot. The falls are fullest after the monsoon and can drop to a trickle between bare rocks in a dry summer.
What is the weather like in Hogenakkal in winter?
Winter days are warm and mostly dry, with cooler early mornings. October to December can bring showers from the northeast monsoon, while January to March is usually clear.
