Hogenakkal

The 'Niagara of India' — where the Cauvery river fans out over carbonatite rocks into a maze of thundering falls, explored by traditional round coracle boats.

Hogenakkal is river-and-rock drama: the Cauvery's smoking falls, coracle (parisal) rides through the gorges, riverside fish fry, oil massages, and the Melagiri forest around.

About Hogenakkal

Hogenakkal is a small riverside village in Dharmapuri district, on the Tamil Nadu–Karnataka border, where the Kaveri (Cauvery) river spreads over a wide shelf of dark rock and breaks into dozens of separate falls. The name comes from Kannada and means "smoking rocks", after the spray that rises from the gorge. The rock itself is carbonatite, around two billion years old and among the oldest in South Asia.

Most visitors come for the day. Watch the falls from the watchtower and the hanging bridge, then take a coracle, the round basket boat called a parisal in Tamil, through the gorges with a registered boatman. Lunch is fried river fish from the stalls on the bank. How your day goes depends on the river: when dams in Karnataka release water, usually between July and September, the falls are at their fullest but coracle rides and bathing are often suspended.

Questions

Hogenakkal — FAQ

What is Hogenakkal famous for?

Hogenakkal is famous for its waterfalls on the Kaveri, often called the Niagara of India, and for coracle rides through the rocky gorges. It is also known for oil massages on the riverbank and fresh river fish fried at stalls beside the falls.

How many days are enough for Hogenakkal?

One full day covers the falls, the watchtower, a coracle ride and a fish lunch. Stay a night if you want a quiet early morning before the day-trippers arrive. Theerthamalai temple, about 100 km away, needs a separate day.

What is the best time to visit Hogenakkal?

October to March is the most comfortable time. The falls are fullest from July to September, when water arrives from Karnataka, but coracle rides and bathing are often banned then. April and May are very hot and the river can be low. See the best time to visit Hogenakkal for a month-by-month guide.

How do I reach Hogenakkal?

The nearest railway station is Dharmapuri, about 46 km away, with regular buses on to Hogenakkal. From Bengaluru it is about 180 km by the main road via Hosur, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri. A shorter route via Denkanikottai and Anchetty runs through forest where elephants cross, so avoid it after dark.

Is it safe to swim at Hogenakkal?

No. Bathe only in the designated areas and never swim in the open river. Deep pools and strong currents cause drownings here every year, and warning boards mark the prohibited stretches. Bathing is banned completely when the river is high.
