The menu here is short and local. These are the dishes to look for.
Riverside Fish Fry
River fish such as catla or rohu, coated in a chilli-and-spice masala and fried crisp at stalls along the bank. You often choose the fish yourself and have it cleaned and fried while you wait. It is the dish most people remember Hogenakkal for.
Cauvery Fish Curry
River fish cooked in a tangy tamarind-and-chilli gravy and eaten with rice. It makes a filling lunch after a morning on the water.
Tamil Meals
A vegetarian plate of rice with sambar, rasam, poriyal (dry-cooked vegetables), curd and pickle, often served on a banana leaf. It is the simplest full meal near the falls.
Molagai Bajji
Large green chillies dipped in gram-flour batter and deep-fried. They are sold hot from the snack stalls near the falls, along with other fried snacks.
Hogenakkal has no café scene. Instead, small stalls near the entrance to the falls sell tea, filter coffee, bajjis and other fried snacks. A strong filter coffee is welcome after a wet coracle ride, and the stalls are busiest at weekends.
Questions
Hogenakkal is famous for its riverside fish fry, made with fresh Kaveri fish and fried at stalls on the bank. Cauvery fish curry, Tamil meals, molagai bajji and filter coffee are the other local favourites.
You usually pick fresh fish from sellers near the river, and a stall cleans, marinates and fries it for you. Agree the price for the fish and the cooking before they start.
It depends on the day's catch from the Kaveri. Catla and rohu are common, along with other river fish.
The fish fry and fish curry are usually spicy, with plenty of chilli in the masala. Tamil meals are milder, and most stalls can make the fish less spicy if you ask.
